While there’s strong evidence that the next coupe and convertible versions of the 3-Series will change names and wear the 4-Series moniker, BMW will enhance the range of its most popular model with a brand new body style that we will come to know as the Gran Turismo or GT for short.

The 3-Series GT will follow in the footsteps of the larger and taller 5-Series GT combining a longer wheelbase than the regular model with a liftback-style body for improved interior space and increased practicality, though early prototypes suggest it won’t be as chunky and thick as the latter.

A report from Autocar magazine claims that BMW will preview the liftback version of the 3-Series as a thinly veiled concept study at next month’s Paris Motor Show and put it on sale by spring of 2013.

Under the bonnet will be a similar engine range to the current 3-Series sedan and Touring (station wagon) comprising turbocharged four- and six-cylinder gasoline and inline-four diesels, and quite possibly, a hybrid powerplant.
