The closest you’ll get to a performance orientated model in the upcoming Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan range (codenamed W222) is no doubt the two AMG-branded and –developed models to be sold under the S63 and S65 AMG monikers.
There is no question that the prototype S-Class spied by our scoop photographers while filing up at a gas station in Germany is one of the two AMG models, and thanks to the square tail pipes, we can tell you that this is most likely the S63 variant as the S65 features twin oval-shaped exhausts on either side of the bumper.
According to sources, both iterations are expected to keep the same powerplants as the current models, though AMG engineers may make some subtle tweaks to improve their fuel efficiency.
As such, the S63 AMG will feature a 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8, which in its current form delivers 530hp (537PS) at 5,500 rpm and 590 lb-ft (800Nm) from 2,000 to 4,500 rpm in standard trim, and 556bhp (564PS) and 664 lb-ft (900Nm) with the optional performance package.
The range-topping S65 AMG will get the current model’s 6.0-liter bi-turbocharged V12 engine making 621hp (630PS) and 1,000Nm (737 lb-ft).
Though still under covers, the prototype reveals some of the bespoke styling cues of the AMG twins including the chunkier front bumper, side skirts, larger alloy wheels shod in low profile tires and a rear diffuser.
AMG engineers will also lower the car’s ride height and tweak the suspension, brake and steering systems to improve handling and control of the sports sedan.
The new S-Class is expected next year with the AMG variants to follow shortly after.
