Here comes the new version of one of Benz’s best-selling models, the C-Class saloon, a prototype of which was caught testing by our spy photographers at Germany’s Nürburgring.
It’s hard to tell what the final production model will look like on the outside from these shots as Mercedes-Benz’s engineers have yet to toss away the heavy camouflage, but the next S-Class, which will arrive earlier than the C-Class, will give us an idea of the styling direction.
We’ve already given you a sneak peek of the interior (see here) that will sport a revamped design highlighted by a large screen hovering on top of three circular air vents on the center console.
Internally called the W205, Merc’s BMW 3-Series and Cadillac ATS rival will make use of a new slightly longer and wider platform architecture for rear- and all-wheel drive models named MRA.
The overhauled chassis along with the use of different materials will make the new C-Class lighter than the current model.
A new generation of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines as well as regular and plug-in hybrid powerplants will power the W205, while a twin-turbocharged V8 engine will take its place under the hood of the flagship AMG model.
Once again, all-wheel drive will be offered as an option in several versions.
The new C-Class in sedan trim is expected to make its appearance at next year’s Frankfurt Motor Show and go on sale worldwide from spring of 2014. It will be followed by station wagon and a coupe models, and possibly a convertible variant as well.
