The presentation of the all-new Porsche 991 Coupe and Convertible in Carrera and Carrera S trims last year is only the beginning of a new family of 911 derivatives and special edition versions that are heading our way over the next few years.
Among the most anticipated models of the new 911 series is the next GT3 that was spied here virtually undisguised by our man with the long lens while testing at its natural habitat, the Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany.
Many Porsche enthusiasts consider the GT3 as the quintessential 911 model as it is more powerful yet lighter and overall more track-focused than the regular variants of the series.
In its new form, the 911 GT3 will continue with a high revving, normally aspirated flat six, though this time, instead of the current model’s 4.0-liter engine, it will use the 991’s 3.8-liter unit modified by Porsche Motorsport’s division to deliver somewhere between 450 and 500 horses.
We still do not know if Porsche will replace the previous model’s 6-speed manual gearbox with a seven-speed stick shift or as some sources suggest, a seven-speed dual-clutch PDK automatic transmission. Either way, the next GT3 will be a rear-wheel drive only model.
Besides the weight savings from the newer 911 chassis and body, the GT3 will also do away with many of the Carrera’s more luxury-oriented features for an even lighter kerbweight.
On the outside, the GT3 gets a double-edge rear wing, along with wider rear fenders, larger but lighter alloy wheels shod in chunkier tires, a redesigned front bumper with a splitter, side skirts and central exhaust outlets. The car will also sport bespoke interior trim.
The next 911 GT3 is expected to go on sale in the second half of 2013.
