Something tells us that 77-year-old Lynn Bedford wasn’t expecting to be yanked out of her car when she was pulled over by a cop for speeding 16 mph (26km/h) over the 50 mph (80km/h) posted limit on Highway 67 near the city of Keene in Texas on August 19.
Video footage from both the officer’s outfit and patrol car cameras recorded the entire incident starting from when Sgt. Gene Geheb approached the woman’s SUV and told her why he stopped her.
Before Geheb could ask her for her driver’s license and insurance, the woman told the officer, “All right, let’s hurry up. I’ve got to go the bathroom.” The cop asked her again for her ID only to be told, “I have a bladder infection.”
The situation escalated from there on with the woman telling the officer “I’ll give it to you in a minute”.
The officer replied, “No, you give it to me now, or I’m going to take you to jail”, to which Bedford said, “Well, go ahead”. And that’s exactly what the cop did pulling the elderly woman out of her car and onto the ground before he handcuffed her and took her into the back seat of his patrol car.
Bedford was eventually released on the same day and the first thing she did was to contact her lawyer, Clay Graham, of Fort Worth.
“The officer is not very interested in listening to what she has to say,” Graham told NBC News. “She gets a little frustrated. And then he just overwhelms her. That’s what I see. And then it goes from routine stop to ridiculous stop.”
Keene Police Chief Rocky Alberti sent a statement to NBC News in which he supports the officer’s actions.
“This incident has been reviewed thoroughly by the Keene Police Department and the City of Keene Administration,” said Alberti. “All parties have concluded that Sgt. Geheb did not violate any state laws or department policies, and in fact was following department policy in regards to violators not providing identification.”
So what do you think? Did Geheb overreact or did he act according to state laws, as the police chief claims? Voice your thoughts in the comments section after the jump.
