Capitalizing on the success of the Cayenne as well as increased demand for smaller SUVs, Porsche is developing a new compact model, which it has already announced that it will be called Macan with sales to start sometime in 2013.
The company’s initial sales projection for the Macan’s first year of the market was 45,000 units annually.
However, German newspaper Wirtschafts Woche is reporting that the Stuttgart-based carmaker’s procurement chief, Uwe-Karsten Staedter, has informed its suppliers that the company will substantially increase production of the Macan by two-thirds or 35,000 units to 75,000 in its first year on the market.
The Audi Q5-based SUV will be built at Porsche’s Leipzig plant and will feature 2.0-liter turbocharged and V6 turbocharged and normally aspirated gasoline engines along with a selection of diesels.
The Macan is expected to play an important role in achieving Porsche’s plan of almost doubling its sales over the course of the next five years, from 118,867 deliveries in 2011 to more than 200,000 in 2018.
