The process of electing the 2013 Car of the Year (COTY) for Europe has officially commenced with the release of the provisional list of candidates.

In order to be eligible, a car must have been released during the past 12 months; is available in at least five European countries; has a projected annual sales figure of no less than 5,000 units and is a new model and not just a new edition.

In December, the provisional list, which is published right after the break, will be narrowed down to seven cars from which the winner will be picked.

The jury consists of 58 journalists from 22 European countries. Members are chosen according to the size of each country’s car market and its importance in the automotive industry.

France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy and Spain have six members each and the rest proportionally less. Each member of the jury has 25 points to assign to at least five cars, with no more than 10 points on a single model.

The COTY is organized by the following publications: Auto (Italy), Autocar (UK), Autopista (Spain), Autovisie (The Netherlands), L’Automobile Magazine (France), Stern (Germany) and Vi Bilägare (Sweden).

Setting up the event is a responsibility taken in turn by each member of the COTY organizing committee. The 2013 COTY will be organized in Italy, with Auto magazine’s Domenico Tudini, representing Conti Editore, being the president of the committee.
