In 1998, a 32-year old Etonian named David Cameron, who at the time, worked for the Conservative Research Department, bought a 1971 Fiat 500 L as a surprise birthday gift for his wife, Samantha.

Fast forward 12 years to 2010 and said Brit assumes the office of British Prime Minister. The classic Cinquecento had been sold to a new owner 10 years after the Camerons acquired it, having covered a mere 1,000 miles in it.

Now, the diminutive Italian classic that once belonged to the current PM and has only 13,000 miles on its odometer, will be auctioned off on November 17 during the Footman James Classic Motor Show at the NEC.

Silverstone Auctions managing director Nick Whale, who expects the 1971 classic to fetch between £8,000 and £12,000 (US$12,800-19,200), commented: “No matter what your political persuasion, this is one cool car. After all, it’s not every day that you get the chance to bid for a car that was once owned by a global figure.”

Now, wouldn’t it be splendid if a prominent Labor Party member made a bid for this cool little car? One Edward Samuel Miliband, MP, certainly springs to mind…
