After making the decision to shift its information technology-operations (IT) from outside to a more in-sourced business services model, General Motors is now moving on to the next phase by hiring people.
On Thursday, the Detroit carmaker said that it will absorb around 3,000 employees from Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP), who are already working on GM’s IT business and place them on its pay roll at no additional cost to the company.
GM said that the transition will take approximately six months to complete.
“These agreements with HP will enable us to accelerate the progress of our IT transformation by delivering increased innovation and speed of delivery to our GM business partners, and reduce the cost of ongoing IT operations,” said GM Chief Information Officer Randy Mott, who himself was hired from HP in February to assist in GM’s in-sourcing plan.
The carmaker has also has purchased HP’s IT Performance Suite, Enterprise Security Suite, Vertica and Autonomy Software, in order to accelerate its plan.
“GM needed a solution to provide confidence, insight and agility to perform better,” said George Kadifa, executive vice president of HP Software. “They didn’t need to look any further than HP’s Performance Suite and are the first customer to purchase the full suite of software to enable their business.”
