There’s talk again in South Korea regarding the possibility of the latest iteration of the Hyundai Sonata mid-size saloon having sudden unintended acceleration problems after a new incident that took place in Seoul’s Seocho district last Wednesday on October 10, 2012, and which resulted in 10 people being injured.
The latest accident in question involved a brand new Hyundai Sonata YF taxicab that was said to have been only two weeks old.
Video footage sourced from a Mercedes-Benz car that was following the Sonata from behind, shows the taxi slowly moving ahead in traffic when all of a sudden, it accelerated and violently smashed into the car in front.
But the episode was far from over as the Sonata started smoking (we cannot tell if the smoke was coming from the engine, the tires spinning or both) and then it went in reverse and hit the Mercedes fitted with the dashboard camera.
According to the Korean media, there’s an investigation pending about the accident to see whether the driver was at fault or if, as the taxi cab owner claims, there was a problem with the car’s accelerator.
Back in May this year, there was another accident with a Sonata YF in the South Korean city of Daegu that was blamed on unintended acceleration and which sparked a government-led investigation.
