Gone are the times that carmakers used the terms’ convertible’ and ‘cabriolet’ to describe genuine open top models. Nowadays, you have Fiat calling the 500C a convertible and Citroen the DS3 Cabrio, well, a cabriolet, even though both models feature a roll over, cloth sunroof that happens to include the rear window.
We didn’t mention those two models by chance, as Hyundai has also attempted something similar with its new Veloster C3 Roll Top Concept that made its world premiere today at the LA Auto Show.
According to the Korean carmaker, C3 stands for “Convertible 3-door” with the concept featuring a canvas-top in place of the center section of the roof and a rear tailgate (instead of a hatch). The roof is full automatic and can be rolls backwards and forwards
“In convertible mode with the top rolled back, the C3 is a free spirit for driving along the Pacific Coast Highway,” explains Hyundai. “Roll the top forward, open the tailgate, fold the rear seats and the C3 goes into recreation mode – perfect for surfing, biking or kayaking.”
Talking about bicycles, Hyundai also designed a special fixed gear bike for the concept that fits in the rear compartment with the tailgate opened.
Other special features on the study include circular exhaust pipes, diffuser vents, 18-inch wheels with chrome inserts and headlight LED accents.
“We were inspired by the proverb ‘A rolling stone gathers no moss,” said Chris Chapman, chief designer, Hyundai Design North America. “The Veloster C3 Roll Top concept offers the ‘no strings attached’ freedom of a roll top convertible and customizable utility that fits an everyday to a play day dual lifestyle.”
