The Toyota Prius is the best-selling hybrid in the world. Which is unsurprising, really, considering that it is currently in its third generation and its line-up has been expanded with both bigger and smaller variants.
It’s also squarely on the sights of Ford, which is constantly comparing its new C-MAX Hybrid against the Prius V, which is the minivan version of the series, be it in commercials or sales figures.
It has gone as far as saying that its own model is “better and more-fuel efficient” than the Prius V.
Motor Trend decided to compare the two models and find out if the Blue Oval’s claims are true or just hype. Toyota wasn’t very happy about the test, saying that the Prius V is a much larger car and, therefore, not a suitable rival for the more compact C-MAX.
Despite the Japanese carmaker’s concerns, Jonny Liebermann took a 2012 Prius V and a 2013 C-MAX Hybrid and decided to settle the score once and for all. He also talked with MT’s “hybrid guru” Kim Reynolds about the controversy surrounding these two vehicles, their EPA and actual mpg figures and their respective technologies.
