In its past issue, CAR magazine celebrated its golden anniversary and declared the Porsche 911 the best car ever in its 50-year-old history.
Editor-at-large Chris Chilton decided to take the new Porsche 911 with the internal codename 991 to the famous Furka Pass in the Swiss Alps. He also brought along a 1965 version of the 911 that’s identical to the original launched in 1963.
It goes without saying that you simply cannot compare a model that was presented five decades ago with a modern one. In the automotive world, five years is way too much time; so, five decades are an eternity.
Of course, the new one is light years ahead of the original in each and every department. It would be absurd not to.
What Chilton set out to discover was whether, despite five decades of evolution, there are still some common strands of DNA between the two cars or if the 911 badge at the rear is the only thing they have in common and all that “heritage” talk is pure marketing.
