The world’s top automaker Toyota is recalling 2.77 million vehicles worldwide on two unrelated problems, one concerning a defective water pump and the other a steering shaft fault, though, some models may need both fixes.
Toyota was quick to point out that no accidents or injuries have been reported related to these two issues.
Overall, 670,000 cars are being recalled in the United States, 1.5 million in Japan and 496,000 in Europe, including 75,000 in the UK.
Beginning with the United States, Toyota will inspect and in some cases replace the steering intermediate extension shaft of around 670,000 examples of the second generation Prius. The Japanese carmaker’s U.S. division said approximately 350,000 of these same Prius models are also being recalled to replace the electric water pump for the hybrid system.
In the UK, the recall concerns certain Avensis and Corolla models made from July 2001 to March 2009, and for Prius hybrid built between July 2003 and April 2009 with the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA). All models listed in the UK recall are previous generation models.
On said Avensis, Corolla and Prius, Toyota stated there is a possibility of an issue with a component in the steering system, which could cause a knocking or rattling and possibly a reduction in steering response.
In addition, on the Prius there is a possibility the water pump in the hybrid system may fail as well (as is the case on the North American model).
Toyota said it plans to issue country-specific details for all recalls.
