You just can’t trust thieves these days. A burglary suspect in White Settlement, Texas, who was handcuffed and left alone in the rear seat of a Ford Crown Victoria squad car, was able to steal the patrol vehicle and make a successful getaway.
Darren Porter, 41, was filmed from another police car parked right behind rolling down the window, opening the door and jumping into the driver’s seat before he stole the patrol vehicle!
At the time, the police officers had gone inside the store of Texas Gas Antiques & Collectibles to meet with the storeowner who had called them in.
What’s worse is that Porter managed to escape arrest with the police car found at a nearby apartment complex.
Kenny Boone, owner of Texas Gas Antiques & Collectibles, described the scene as soon as the officers saw what had happened to The AP:
“Of course, they all jumped in their cars,” said Boone, according to The Republic. “They were all scrambling to their vehicles to chase him.”
What had happened is that the rear window switches of squad cars are supposed to be disabled, but evidently, that was not the case here.
Porter, who has a long criminal history, remains at large.
