It’s been a little over a year since Volkswagen stormed the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show with a group of six concept models based on its new Up! city car, each sporting a different subject.

One of those studies showed how the Up! would look like with a tougher, SUV-like makeover, and was subsequently displayed in different colors at the Geneva Motor Show in March this year.

At the time, Volkswagen made no effort to hide the fact that it was considering a production version of the Cross Up! in the near future. Now, we have solid proof that the Germans have already green lighted the project, thanks to these spy pictures of a camouflage-free prototype of the Cross Up!.

So, has Volkswagen changed anything from the concept? Well, the only difference between the two is that of the protective black moldings on the lower part of the doors, which sport the car’s name. Other than that, the concept and the prototype seen here are identical, right up to the alloy wheel designs and the bumper trims.

Like other “Cross” models in VW’s range such as the CrossPolo and CrossGolf, the five-door hatchback won’t feature any mechanical changes over its regular siblings, meaning that power will come from the same 59bhp (60PS) and 74bhp (75PS) versions of the brand’s 1.0-liter three-cylinder petrol engine driving the front wheels.

Given that the car is virtually ready, we could see it making its world premiere as early as the Geneva Motor Show next year.
