Less than a week before its scheduled world premiere at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, General Motors has shared a single picture of its new Cadillac ELR coupe covered in wraps while driving through the mountains of Southern California during development testing.
The ELR extended-range electric luxury coupe is the production version of the wreath and crest brand’s Converj Concept displayed at the 2009 Detroit auto show.
It makes use of a version of the hybrid electric powertrain found on the Chevrolet Volt that combines an electric motor with a T-shaped lithium-ion battery package and a gasoline-engine generator for extended range, with power transferred to the front wheels.
“Cadillac customers are going to enjoy the unique features ELR will bring to the market,” said Chris Thomason, ELR chief engineer. “We’re going to change the way people think about luxury and electrification.”
Series production and sales of the new ELR coupe will begin in fall of 2013.
