Beginning from next year, BMW fans will have to get used to calling the new coupe version of the 3-Series the 4-Series, with the Bavarian carmaker previewing the production model through a very thinly disguised concept at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
The concept features a slightly longer wheelbase, wider stance and considerably lower roofline than the current 3-Series Coupe.
Only certain elements of the study will be toned down a notch such as the exterior mirrors, the bumper designs and the large alloy wheels, while the production car will also do away with the full leather interior trims.
On the engine front, it might have a different name, but the 4-Series will borrow its entire lineup from the 3-Series sedan, with U.S. offerings to include the 428i with a 240hp 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline unit and the 435i with a 300hp 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six.
Europeans will get a more extensive engine lineup that will include diesel options. A hotter M4 variant with a turbocharged six delivering around 450-ponies will follow in 2014.
Below you will find photos of the 4-Series Concept as well as the i3 and i8 Spider studies that are also on display in Detroit.
