There was a rumor going around last year that Nissan may shift production of the Murano crossover from Japan to its Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant in Missisipi to better compete in the North American market due to the rising cost of the yen, which eats into its profits.
On Thursday, Nissan made it official announcing that the next-generation Murano crossover will be built in the States at the Canton facility.
In addition, Nissan confirmed our suspicions that its Detroit motor show Resonance Concept will give us an idea of what the new Murano will look like when it arrives in the market in 2014.
The Murano will become the eighth Nissan vehicle to be built at the Canton assembly plant since it was established in 2003. Other vehicles manufactured at the factory include the Altima, the Armada full-size SUV, the Xterra mid-size SUV, the Titan and Frontier pickup trucks and the NV commercial and passenger vans.
“As we look back on ten years of manufacturing in Canton, it’s become clear throughout the Nissan network that ‘Made in Mississippi’ is a stamp of quality and great people,” said Bill Krueger, vice chairman of Nissan Americas. “With the addition of this new model in Canton, Nissan is well on its way toward meeting our goal to manufacture 85 percent of the vehicles we sell in the U.S. right here in North America.”
