Porsche engineers have once again been caught on camera testing the upcoming 918 Spyder, which evidently, is in its final development stages, as production will begin in September with first customer deliveries to arrive early next year.

The camouflage-free testers of Porsche’s first supercar model since the demise of the Carrera GT in 2007 were dressed in two of the many optional films that will be available along with a pallet of colors at a cost that will likely rival that of a small car.

We say this because, according to a leaked brochure last year, Porsche asks US$65,000 for the “special” Liquid Metal Blue or Liquid Metal Grey exterior finishes!

Another option for prospective buyers will be the Weissach Package that does away with amenities and comfort features such as the air conditioning, audio system, armrest and door storage to reduce weight by 34 kg (77 pounds). A 918 Spyder with this package recently lapped the Nordschleife in 7:14’.

As for the car itself, the 918 Spyder will start at US$845,000 in the United States and €645,000 in Europe, excluding local taxes.

The top Porsche model features a plug-in hybrid driveline coupling a mid-mounted, 4.6-liter V8 with more than 570PS (+562hp) to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission driving the rear wheels and a pair of electric motors, for a combined system output of 795-horses (according to Porsche’s most recent release).
