Well, here’s a new one. A South African civilian motorist from Pietermaritzburg is making the news in his country and around the world for stopping and…arresting an allegedly drunk police officer!
Russell George from Prestbury told reporters that while driving his car on Sunday evening, he noticed a police van “swerving wildly across the road” and decided to take action.
“The van turned into Victoria Road, and drove into oncoming traffic,” said George, according to Allfrica. “At one stage, he stopped. I got out of my car and asked him what he was doing.”
The cop, who was later identified as Constable Nkululeko Mbanjwa, 28, disregarded the motorist and drove off.
After calling the police, George then pursued Mbanjwa and when the van stopped for a second time, he swiftly approached the vehicle, to confront him.
“I could smell the booze on him. He refused to get out of the car, so I took his keys,” said George, who then grabbed the cop and locked him in the back of his van until the police arrived!
It was later revealed that the cop had been involved in a hit-and-run incident with a another vehicle just before George arrested him.
Sandile Mabaso, a driver for Cubicle Solution told The Witness: “I quickly swerved the truck off the road, but he hit me on the side. If I had not swerved, he would have hit me head-on.”
The 28-year old officer is now facing charges of driving while under the influence of alcohol, reckless and negligent driving.
