As accurate as it may be, the image of the 2014 Smart ForTwo shared by the organizers of the 83rd Geneva International Auto Show on the event’s official website earlier this month, was a speculative rendering.

These spy photos, on the other hand, are the real deal, though, you’ll be forgiven to see more Renault Twingo than Smart ForTwo, but there’s a reasonable explanation for that.

As was the case with the new ForFour prototype, the ForTwo seen here is test mule, which means Smart is hiding the car’s new chassis under a modified Twingo body.

That’s no coincidence as the next Smart ForTwo and Renault Twingo are being co-developed by the two brands and will share their platform, and rear-mounted engine and transmission options.

Smart’s new two-seater model will borrow many styling elements from the ForVision Concept study displayed at the 2011 Paris Motor Show. The range will include coupe, convertible and more powerful Brabus editions, along with pure electric and hybrid variants.
