When we first heard that the sleek new Maserati Quattroporte was getting a base V6 engine, whereas the previous generation car only had a beefy V8, we shook our head in disagreement. However, when the words twin turbo and all-wheel drive are added into the mix, along with a respectable 404hp (410 PS), we became considerably more interested.
Now that the car is here, Maserati is trying to highlight the surefooted nature of its new sedan, in particular that of the S Q4 all-wheel drive variant, in the latest official promo released by the automaker. The video is mostly shot on snow-covered mountain roads, and luckily enough, there just happened to be a tunnel there, for us to better hear the 3.0-liter V6 engine – which is a good thing.
It sounds good – almost like the 4.9-liter V8 from the 1970 Ghibli SS, which is great. It seems like they went for quiet turbos, and more of a race car-like exhaust note, complete with a mild case of soothing backfiring on deceleration from high rpms.
The Maserati Quattroporte S Q4 seems like a very tempting proposition in the class, but with a rear end which looks a bit like a squashed Ford Fusion and an interior nowhere near as opulent as that of the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class (which also happens to have a nicer-looking rear end, as well, in my opinion), it will have to prove that it is more than just an Italian alternative for those who don’t like the German way, and also be a good car.
