The third variant of BMW’s 3-Series, after the sedan and estate, made its world premiere at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. It is not the coupe, which became the 4-Series, but the…ahem…“unique interpretation of the need for space and functionality” (BMW’s words, not ours) that is the Gran Turismo.
Aimed at those who want to combine the sporty driving characteristics of the sedan with the extra practicality of the estate (sic), the 3-Series GT is 200 mm (7.9 in) longer and 81 mm (3.2 in) taller than the Touring, while its wheelbase has been stretched by another 110 mm (4.3 in).
In Europe, it will be available with three gasoline and two diesel engines, starting with the 141HP 320d and topping out at the 302HP 335i. Thankfully, power is still directed to the rear wheels (with AWD set to become an option later) via a six-speed manual or an eight-speed auto gearbox.
BMW’s need to cover every niche is understandable but, still, a liftback rose by any other name… It does make us wonder though if the same people actually designed the 3 (and 5) GT and, say, the 6-Series Gran Coupe or if Munich employs an “A” and a “B” team.
