It really wasn’t that difficult to predict that the new Clio GT, which was unwrapped at this week’s Geneva Motor Show, would most likely be powered by Renault’s 1.2-liter turbocharged engine.
The new addition to the Clio Mk4 range boasts 118HP (120PS) and 190 Nm (140 lb-ft) of torque, courtesy of its direct injection forced-induction powerplant. It’s also much more frugal than the Clio III GT, returning an average consumption of 5.2 lt/100 km (45.2 mpg US, 54.3 mpg UK) and emitting 120 g of CO2 per km.
Its official name also reveals that, like the top-of-the-line RS, the GT’s engine is mated to a dual-clutch six-speed transmission with steering column mounted paddle shifts. It also features an “RS Drive” button that changes the feel of the power steering, throttle response and gearshift changes and makes them sportier than the “Normal” and “Sport” modes that are also available.
To set the GT apart from lesser versions, Renault Sport redesigned the grille, front and rear bumpers and side sills and added offset LED daytime running lights, twin chrome exhaust pipes, GT logos and 17-inch alloys, as well as an optional “Malta Blue” color.
The new Clio GT will be available in both five-door hatchback and estate versions but unlike the RS that will be built in Dieppe, France, it will be manufactured in Renault’s plant in Bursa, Turkey.
