Mercedes-Benz is out testing the fourth generation (fifth, if you take into consideration the original 190E) of its C-Class again, only this time; the prototype model is wearing less camouflage giving us a better look at the compact executive sedan’s shape, which from the looks of it, will resemble a smaller and sportier looking (next) W222 S-Class.
Set for a world premiere in 2014, the new model will move up a notch, both in terms of size and technological advancements, after Mercedes’ decision to broaden its sedan lineup with the CLA that arrives in dealerships this summer.
Riding on a new platform featuring a longer wheelbase that’s named MRA (for Modular Rear-wheel drive Architecture), the W205-codenamed C-Class will stretch to around 4,700mm (185 inches) in length, or about 110mm (4.3 inches) more than the current model.
Despite the larger footprint, the use of lighter materials in the chassis and the body will help the new model weigh less than the car it replaces.
Under the hood, the W205 will offer buyers an extensive range of diesel, petrol and petrol-electric hybrid options, topped out by an AMG high-performance variant that will likely swap the venerable naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 for a new twin-turbocharged V8 delivering about the same output at 451Hp (457PS) in base form, more with an optional power package.
Soon after the launch of the sedan model, Mercedes will enhance the range with the two-door and estate variants.
