There’s a replacement for the current Mercedes-Benz CL-Class luxury 2+2 coupe in the horizon, and as you probably have heard already (we’ll repeat it just in case you missed out), it won’t carry the same name, as the Stuttgart-based carmaker has made the decision to use the S-Class Coupe moniker instead.
The well-camouflaged model seen in these latest photos was spotted undergoing winter testing in Northern Sweden. From these images, Benz’s new upscale coupe appears to have a more muscular appearance than the current CL with pronounced rear fenders, a sweeping roofline, a rakish rear window and a strong front end.
We’ve yet to see images of the interior, but we suspect that Mercedes will provide the S-Class Coupe with a slightly sportier dashboard design and trim than the four-door S-Class, while borrowing many of the latter’s tech features such as the fully digital dashboard paired with a large screen for the infotainment system.
Like the W222-codenamed saloon version of the expanded S-Class family, which is expected to debut in the middle of May, the Coupe will feature the new Magic Ride Control system that employs cameras to scan the road in front of the car and adjust the suspension settings accordingly, and also offers Sport and Comfort modes.
So, what else should you know about the new S-Class Coupe? Well, it will ride on a modified version of the W222’s lighter platform, which together with the use of composite materials and aluminum on the body and the chassis, will help shed some pounds over the CL.
In addition, from what we’ve heard, it will launch with twin-turbocharged V8 and V12 engines for both the regular and the 63- and 65-AMG models, with all-wheel drive to be offered on certain models as an option – possibly even on one of the AMGs as Mercedes continues to expand the availability of its specially tuned 4MATIC system for high-performance models.
Look for the new S-Class Coupe to make its world premiere next year.
