If you want to feel even guiltier when going over the speed limit, and you just happen to be in the market for a compact hatchback, why not get a VW Golf, with its newfangled Road Sign Recognition system? It shows you how fast you should be driving, and it adapts and adjusts according to road conditions – it’s definitely something you’d love to show your friends.

The system uses a camera mounted behind the rear-view mirror, which scans the road ahead and lets you know how fast you should be driving, by detecting and recognizing all road signs. One often misses these, as they may not be ideally placed, or one just happens to glance out the side window at the precise time – it happens a lot…

It also adapts to the weather conditions, and for instance, if it senses rain, it will display the appropriate speed limit on the car’s small display, classically located between the two main dials. It really is trick stuff and it may help you avoid some speeding tickets and generally drive in a safer and be more aware.

The video presentation shown below is rather limited, but you get an idea of what the system is all about. Check it out after the jump and please do share your thoughts on Road Sign Recognition, which is also called Traffic Sign Recognition or TSR – do you think it’s useful or not?
