At least three people were killed and 25 were taken to the hospital in huge pileup involving 95-vehicles that happened on Interstate 77 near the Virginia and North Carolina state line Sunday afternoon, according to reports. As is often the case with events such as this, fog and generally poor visibility are to blame here (and possibly drivers not keeping a safe distance).
It was not one single big crash, but a series of 17 smaller ones that took place between mile markers 5 and 6, on the southbound side of the road. Fire caused concern to the emergency crews, as an 18-wheeler burst into flames, affecting six additional cars.
Now, for as long as we will have highways on which people drive their cars quickly, and weather phenomena that reduce visibility drastically, crashes such as this are bound to happen. The only thing drivers can do is to slow down, be alert and keep a safe driving distance from the vehicles in front.
