The Lamborghini Gallardo is approaching the end of the line, after a very successful eight-year production run, and what a better way to celebrate the occasion than with another special edition model. It will be the final sendoff for the Gallardo, so you might expect it to be something special, as it truly deserves to be, because the model had sold over 13,000 examples worldwide, bringing in good profits for Audi and Lamborghini.
What will set this final variant apart is the fact that it is the last Lamborghini you will ever be able to buy with a manual transmission – ever. That won’t really be a huge loss for buyers of the car’s replacement, because Gallardos equipped with flappy-paddle gearboxes outsold their manual counterparts nine to one. Furthermore, their manual box was described as notchy and hard to use smoothly, unless your name is Valtentino Balboni.
The yet-unnamed final version will also get a stripped out interior, rear-wheel drive and a name which we will all struggle to pronounce – ask ten people to say Gallardo Superleggera, see how many interpretations come up, and you’ll know what we’re on about.
If you’re more curious about the replacement, Road&Track got a chance to speak with Lamborghini of America CEO, Michael Lock, and all he said was: “With the replacement for the Gallardo, Lamborghini will be at a crossroads […] The replacement for that car is pivotal,” which is not very revealing. Still, it really needs to be something special to represent true progress over the Gallardo.
