We can’t remember the last time that Maserati launched two completely new models in such a short time frame – we’re talking about the new generation of the full-size Quattroporte displayed at the Detroit Auto Show in January, and the upcoming world premiere of the mid-size Ghibli sedan at next week’s Auto China 2013 in Shanghai.

And there’s more to come as Maserati’s product plan calls for the debut of the Levante crossover that is the production version of the 2011 Kubang Concept. Is there room for more presentations? Well, of course there is, but it all depends on how well the Ghibli and the Kubang are received by the public.

If everything goes as planned and Maserati penetrates these two very important mid-size segments, then we could see a car like the Maserati GranCorsa Concept proposed by industrial design student AJ Merk from Cleveland Ohio, in the no so distant future.

Merk says the design study is for a mid-engined coupe, though, from these renderings, one could easily mistake it for having a front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout. Take a look at the renderings below and voice your thoughts about the design in the comments.
