The current aim of green US automaker Tesla Motors is to build as many Model S sedans as it can, sell them, then use the money to get the Model X finished and into production, and then fund the development and production of their all-electric BMW 3-Series rival. However, the fourth car they are looking to make is even more interesting – a completely new Roadster, a follow-up to their very first model.
The all-new Roadster, which is speculated to be called the Model R, won’t make its debut before Tesla has a stable three-model range that would allow the company to make what promises to be a very interesting little sports car, at not too great a financial risk to itself.
Also, in the five years we have to wait for its arrival, the technology will have moved on quite a bit, so it should have no problem in surpassing the performance figures of its predecessor and driving range.
Tesla’s George Blankenship, who was quoted by English magazine Autocar, confirms this – it will reach 60 mph (96 km/h) in under four seconds, and its range will exceed the claimed 200 miles (320 km) of the first Roadster. Still, nothing is said about the top speed, but they should be weary that the Detroit Electric SP:01 does an impressive 155 mph (249 km/h), according to the reborn manufacturer.
Blankenship also announced that the Model S is going on sale in the UK later this year, and that they “have identified a site in central London,” where they will be setting up their first showroom, or store – it is “a high-profile location,” he added.
