In this day and age, automakers share a number of common components, which is beneficial in terms of pushing down costs and development times, but can also be troublesome when something goes wrong, as is the case of a faulty air bag from Japanese manufacturer Takata Corp., which is used by Toyota, Honda, Mazda and Nissan.
Overall, the four Japanese carmakers and their subsidiaries are recalling 3.4 million vehicles worldwide for the same issue that stems from improperly manufactured propellant wafers that could cause the airbag inflator to rupture and the front passenger airbag to deploy abnormally in the event of a crash.
A report from USA Today says that Toyota will recall some 1.7 million cars around the globe include 580,000 in North America, 490,000 in Europe and 320,000 in Japan. Some of the affected models include the Toyota Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Sequoia, and Tundra, and Lexus SC 430 models manufactured from 2001 – 2003.
Nissan is said to recall about 480,000 vehicles globally, including the 2000-2004 Nissan Maxima, Pathfinder and Sentra, and Infiniti FX and QX4, while Mazda will recall around 45,000 cars.
As for Honda, it will recall 1.1 million vehicles worldwide, of which 680,000 are in North America, 270,000 in Japan and 64,000 in Europe. Affected models in the U.S. include the 2001-2003 Civics, 2002-2003 CR-Vs and the 2002 Odyssey.
