The original car thieves, the ones you see portrayed in movies, who used to steal a car with only the use of a bent clothes hanger, then have the vehicle stripped and sold in mere hours are gone. Their modern day equivalent is nowhere near as glamorous and daredevil-ish as one might imagine – nowadays they post “cash sandwich” photos on Facebook, to lead the cops straight to them.
This story is about a prolific group of car thieves, which were into stealing high-end cars, breaking into high-end homes and committing high-risk burglaries. A total of 15 such break-ins were reported in London posher districts.
An article from The Daily Mail gives us the full picture. Apparently, members of the so-called gang began posting silly photos of themselves on their social networking accounts, standing alongside (or on) stolen Porsches, BMWs Range Rovers and even a Mercedes C63 AMG.
The police were tipped off, and after examining the photos, it was concluded that they did indeed show stolen vehicles. Furthermore, upon apprehending them and searching their phones, they found additional photos and videos in which they bragged about what cars they were eyeing next.
The “principal conspirator”, Kalan Williamson, was found guilty for a total of 11 burglaries. He is twenty years young, and is to spend four years and eight months in prison. Also, his friends, with ages ranging from 18 to 23 are also going to jail, with their sentences varying according to their level of implication in the scheme.
Amusingly, ever since the gang was apprehended, burglaries reported in the Kensington area of London went down by 48 percent!
