GM is well aware of the fact that many family car buyers dig more airbags inside their vehicles. Having covered all the usual parts of the cabin with airbags, GM has now added one in a very unusual place in the “reimagined” 2013 Chevy Traverse – in between the fronts seats, deploying upward, which is being advertised in this new commercial.
According to the presentation, it limits the driver’s range of movement, keeping him or her firmly planted in the seat, which should be the safest place in the entire vehicle, in the event of a crash, with all of the airbags it has, as well as the extensive body strengthening treatment all new cars get.
However, throughout the video, I couldn’t take my eyes off the (most likely) plastic faux wood center console which looks out of place and is in complete contrast with the style of the interior, and the exterior for that matter, both of which are quite restrained and modern – almost missed the slow-mo deployment of the airbag because of it.
So is this another sales-boosting gimmick or a proper piece of useful safety kit? Feel free to comment.
