Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk is not one to back down from a public dispute. The latest one started with Tesla’s announcement that it had repaid in full its government loan, with the release adding that it is the first American carmaker to do so. This made Chrysler respond with a statement in which it said it was the first U.S. carmaker to have repaid the U.S. government loan in 2011, not Tesla.
Did you think Musk was convinced by Chrysler’s statement and stopped right there? No, he replied to Chrysler’s release on Twitter by saying the Detroit-based carmaker is no longer American, as it is owned by Fiat, and it still owes money to the government.
“As many have already noted, Chrysler is a division of Fiat, an Italian company. We specifically said first ‘U.S.’ company,” Musk wrote on Twitter. “More importantly, Chrysler failed to pay back $1.3B. Apart (from) those 2 points, you were totally 1st,” read his tweet.
The $1.3 billion (€1 billion) Musk was referring to was given by the U.S. Treasury to the old Chrysler to help its transition to a new entity in 2009. The money was not given as a loan, and the company is not obliged to pay it back. So technically it’s not a loan, it’s more like money given by a loving parent to his son. Only the loving parent in this case gives taxpayers’ money to his son, not his own.
So there you have it, the ball is now in Chrysler’s court. Will the automaker have an answer to Musk’s statement or will it choose to ignore it? We believe we’ll soon find out.
