Well, this was something we weren’t expecting; in a not so flattering move for a company of the size and the likes of General Motors, the Detroit automaker has decided to enter the small commercial van segment in its home market, not with one of its own creations but by placing the bow-tie badge on the new Nissan NV200 and naming it the 2015 Chevrolet City Express.
“Our fleet customers have asked us for an entry in the commercial small van segment, so this addition to the Chevrolet portfolio will strengthen our position with fleets and our commercial customers,” stated Ed Peper, U.S. vice president of GM Fleet and Commercial Sales.
The City Express will be built by Nissan and will be sold by GM through its Chevrolet dealer network exclusively in the United States and Canada, beginning from fall of 2014.
General Motors hasn’t released any other details on the City Express, but being a re-badging job, chances are the Chevrolet model will be offered with the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine connected to a CVT as the 186.2 inch (4,729 mm) long NV200 cargo van, which is also available as a taxi cab.
