It’s not the first time that McLaren has stated it is aiming to break the seven-minute barrier around the Nürburgring Nordschleife with their hybrid hypercar, the P1. Nevertheless, just to make their intentions more clear, the British carmaker entered cheeky mode and showed a slide in which a time of 6:33.26 was posted. The image was shared by Chinese website Autohome.

At first it was thought that it was the actual time the P1 had achieved around the famed German track, but after the story was posted on Jalopnik, an explanation from McLaren was issued, which read:

“The image in question was included on a slide which was part of a mood board to inspire the design team for the McLaren P1, and not the engineers, who are working to a target time of ‘merely’ sub-7 minutes” – this latest statement (as well as the photo, indirectly) confirm their intentions.

If the car had achieved the posted lap time, it would have been a very impressive feat, and yet, judging by all of the big numbers which surround the P1, it’s seems feasible. To compare and put things into perspective about what a sub-7 minute lap time around the ‘Ring actually means, here’s the 6:47.50 lap posted by the non-street legal Pagani Zonda R, which has 739 hp (164 hp less than the P1’s combined total), but is lighter so it’s a balanced comparison.
