Unless Volkswagen gives the green light to the likes of the sizzling Design Vision GTI Concept, the Golf R will remain the ultimate production model in the compact hatchback’s range. We’ve already seen spy pictures of the car and now, a video of a prototype Golf R Mk7 has surfaced on YouTube from the crew at MonsterChannle24.

Just like the outgoing model, the new Golf R will rely on a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine for its motivation, connected to a standard six-speed manual or an optional dual-clutch DSG transmission and a Haldex 4Motion all-wheel drive system.

We don’t have the final numbers yet, but we’re expecting the four-pot to be more powerful than the Golf R Mk6’s 266hp (270PS), something that along with the lighter body and MQB platform, should improve the car’s performance numbers.

Look for the new Golf R to make its world premiere later this year, possibly at the Frankfurt Motor Show, with sales to begin in Europe in 2014 – North America might have to wait another year to get the car.
