Tesla wants to expand its sale operations for the the Model S (and future models), as according to the Chinese media, the Silicon Valley-based automaker is bringing the all-electric sedan to the Chengdu motor show, in September. Already a pretty expensive car, the Model S could end up costing a lot more once it’s all-taxed up and legal in the country. This is important because its appeal hinges on it.
In China, this will only be a car for the wealthiest of citizens, and bought more as a green statement and oddball choice by the country’s new money. Tesla will continue to want to own all of its sales outlets, and we’ll have to see how much that clashes with the local legal rules and regulations.
The report from China’s Autohome says the first planned dealership will be set up in Beijing, and they will try to bring in the same experience their US customers are treated to upon entering their grounds.
Keep in mind that this is not an official report (yet), but we would totally get why they would want to make a move in China – the market is huge, and they could definitely tap into it. If this does turn out to be true, they may even be considering local manufacturing, as they are already on their way to doing so in Europe.
