Seeing a Citroen SM on the roads of Europe is a treat, because these cars are by no means common, due to their specialist status, the relative low number in which they were built, and the high associated acquisition and restoration prices.
If you live in the US, chances are you’ll never see one, because not that many were imported and, like the car we are about to show you, plenty are kept in storage, slowly decaying away.
I found this example on eBay, and I liked the honest approach to providing information. The current owner says his 1973 car has had $5,713-worth spent on it during the last seven months – a number that can be verified with receipts. Most of it probably went into servicing the three-liter Maserati-sourced V6 engine and the active hydropneumatic suspension setup.
The starting bid for the car is currently set at $8,000, but it will appreciate prior to the actual sale occurring. So, if you were looking for a very unique but very modern classic, you simply can’t go wrong with the SM.
Be warned, though, that while the SM was ahead of its time in so many ways, parts like the electrics and electronics do reflect its age, and may not work as intended. Also, bills of a more mechanical nature will also require specialist attention and possibly the need to fly parts over from Europe – it’s not cheap, but I believe, well-worth when all is said and done.
