The life of a factory test driver in Germany must be an eventful one. Driving prototypes all day long, up and down the autobahn, and whatever speed is relevant for any given test. However, things don’t always go according to plan during these high-speed tryouts of new cars, as was the case with this BMW 2-Series prototype which removed 50 meters (165 feet!) of guardrail on the A72 Autobahn.

Details are sparse, but it would appear that the vehicle was being driven fast, when something happened, which lead to it mowing down the metallic barrier and spreading bits of itself over a 150-meter (490-foot) area, also launching projectiles/shrapnel at cars coming the other way – the damage to other vehicles wasn’t extensive, though.

Most importantly, the driver got out in one piece, and the car proved very sturdy, as it looks surprisingly intact for the amount of damage it was claimed to have done.

As a reminder, if you haven’t seen the 2-Series fully uncovered, do click right here, and head over to see it without its front fascia missing and psychedelic camo covering the two-door body.
