The French are renowned for making great hot hatches, and aside from the selection of modern examples of the genre, there are also a great deal of classic ones to choose from.
A Renault Super 5 GT Turbo (which in some ways, is being revived by the next Twingo) would be a quirky left-field choice, especially in the US and Canada, which is why this red example from eBay looks like a tempting buy.
Built in 1988, the car is not stock, having been modified in 2009, when the engine’s power output was boosted to 184 horsepower, which is a lot considering the very low weight of the French supermini. It also received a new transmission, competition clutch and disk brakes on all four corners, to handle the extra power.
Still, make no mistake; if this car produces the advertised power figure, it will be a handful on those occasions as you will be pushing it a little bit more than usual. It’s currently listed ata $9,200 ‘Buy Now’ price on eBay, but it may set you back more if you also want to refurbish the interior – driver’s seat looks a bit torn and nasty.
