The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive has broken the lap record for electric cars on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, setting a time of 7 minutes and 56.234 seconds. The SLS is also the first EV to lap the famous track in under 8 minutes. The record time has been certified two weeks after the overall win for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 in the Nürburgring 24 Hours.

“Mercedes-AMG is the first vehicle manufacturer to have circled the Nordschleife in under eight minutes with an electrically-powered series production vehicle. This record run is further proof for our constant innovative vigour,” said Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG.

Mercedes says the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive corresponds to the series version, which will launch later this month. The all-wheel drive electric SLS is currently the most powerful AMG high-performance car, with its four electrical motors developing a total output of 751 hp and maximum torque of 1,000 Nm (737 lb-ft) sent to all four wheels. The car accelerates from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.9 seconds and can reach an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).

As with any electric vehicle, the enormous amount of torque is available entirely from standstill, ensuring very fast accelerations. We know you’re anxious to see the Nürburgring lap, so we’ll only tell you that there’s nothing wrong with the volume in the video below – that’s just how “loud” the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive is.
