Whereas the market for luxury station wagons (at least outside of North America) definitely exists, the need for high-performance versions of these practical and usually spacious models is rather limited.

Surprisingly, that hasn’t stopped some premium brands from developing what we like to call super-station wagons such as the Audi RS6 Avant, BMW M5 Touring and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Wagon. Even Cadillac has taken a shot at the niche category with the CTS V Wagon, which we think is a future classic, given that it’s the first of its kind from Cadillac and it’s not at all certain that there will be a successor.

There’s nothing of the sort being planned by Japanese carmakers, which leaves us with one more player in the estate segment, Jaguar with its new XF Sportbrake series. Even before the release of the regular station wagon version of the XF, the British carmaker had said that it wants to build a high-performance iteration using the mechanicals of the XFR.

Recently, our spies caught on to a prototype of the XF Sportbrake fitted with the aerodynamic goods of the XFR-S sedan, which is powered by a tweaked version of the XFR’s 503hp (510PS) 5.0-liter supercharged V8 delivering 542hp (550PS). Inspired by these shots, Photoshop specialist Khalil Bouguerra took the liberty to produce a design of what the production XFR-S Sportbrake could look like finished in white. You can check it out in the gallery below.
