With the new W222-codenamed S-Class, Mercedes-Benz is abandoning its policy of one sedan version with two different wheelbase lengths for the series and expanding the range to include up to six different models along with three different wheelbases.

At least one of these models will try to give Mercedes-Benz a presence in the super luxury sedan segment that it unsuccessfully attempted to infiltrate with the now obsolete Maybach 57 and 62 models.

Dubbed internally as the “Super S-Class”, it will be priced and equipped with the necessary features to compete against “$200,000 to $250,000” Rolls-Royce and Bentley models, according to Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche.

Zetsche told Autonews in an interview that the cars he is referring to are the Rolls-Royce Ghost (priced from a little over $250,000) and the new Bentley Flying Spur that starts from $205,000.

The German company’s boss added that the new model will have “much better cost basis” and that it will offer additional “technology and interior appointments” over the regular 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class that will reach showrooms in September.

The new “Super S-Class”, which we believe is the prototype with the extended wheelbase, roof and rear doors depicted in our scoop pictures below, is expected to be introduced in 2015.
