Porsche today celebrated the production of the 500,000th Cayenne SUV at the Leipzig plant in Germany. The milestone comes after 11 years of production, with the first Porsche Cayenne rolling off the assembly line in 2002.

“We started with around 70 units a day. Today we produce five times as much owing to the high market demand. In the past year alone, over 83,000 Cayenne vehicles for customers in more than 125 countries have rolled off the assembly line. A genuine success story of the Porsche plant in Saxony,” said Oliver Blume, Porsche Member of the Executive Board Production and Logistics.

The 500,000th Porsche Cayenne, a second generation model, was handed over on Friday to its new owner at the Leipzig plant. Porsche says around 2,500 customers come to pick up their new vehicle in person and to drive Porsche models on the limit at the company’s FIA-certified circuit and on the off-road track.

That’s exactly what the owner of the 500,000th Cayenne did, an Austrian who ordered a white Cayenne S Diesel, fitted with a 382 PS (377HP) 4.2-liter V8 engine. It is the most powerful Cayenne diesel model, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) in 5.7 seconds and reaching a top speed of 252 km/h (156 mph). Combined fuel economy on the European cycle is rated at 8.3 liters/100 km (28.33 US mpg).
