Given how competitive German carmakers are with each other, even more in the luxury segments, it was rather surprising to see Mercedes-Benz’s parent company Daimler throwing in the white towel and announcing the death of Maybach, thus leaving the BMW Group with its Rolls-Royce brand and the VW Group with Bentley alone in most exotic saloon category.
We don’t know what will happen in the distant future, but for now, Daimler is looking to cover parts of the segment with special versions of its spanking new S-Class with much longer wheelbases and increased luxury appointments.
These spy shots from Germany show an extended wheelbase version of the W222 S-Class with longer, and modified rear doors and a C-pillar that looks like it’s hosting an additional third side window similar to the Maybach 62, which measured 242.7 inches (6.17m) long, versus 225.5 inches (5.73m) for the shorter Maybach 57.
Since our spies didn’t have a tape measure in hand while taking these pictures, it’s impossible to accurately tell the length of the wheelbase and the car itself, but it is clearly quite longer than the S-Class LWB (206.5-inches / 5,246 mm).
Whether this is the rumored top-of the line Pullman version, as suggested by German magazine Autobild, or an intermediate variant as proposed by one of our readers (R.V.) who sent in an email, it is hard to tell without additional information, which we lack at this time.
