Three decades since Toyota first launched the Camry nameplate in the U.S., and the Japanese sedan has reached the 10 millionth sales mark in the country. America’s top-selling passenger car for the past 11 years, the Camry makes up almost 20 percent of all the vehicles Toyota has ever sold in the U.S. The milestone comes on the same year Camry celebrates its 30th anniversary in the States.
“We couldn’t be more excited about Camry’s 10 millionth sale in the U.S. With the support of so many loyal customers, Camry has truly become part of the country’s fiber,” said Bob Carter, senior vice president of automotive operations of Toyota Motor Sales.
The first generation Camry was introduced in the U.S. market in 1983 and sold 52,651 units in its first full year of sales. 30 years later, 773 of those Camrys are still on the roads. Of the 10 million Camrys from all seven generations sold in the U.S., Toyota says approximately 6.4 million are still among us.
Production of the Camry in the States began in May 1988 in Georgetown, Kentucky, and today virtually all Camrys sold in the U.S. are built domestically. The Japanese automaker states that currently, the Camry is the “most American made car” with 75 percent of its components built here, according to data provided from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
