Ever since Ford deemed it productive to start selling what is basically the same Fiesta that the Europeans get in the US, it created a moderately big Polo-sized gap in VW’s Stateside lineup. Now, according to a MotorTrend report, the Wolfsburg giant has taken notice of this, and may offer the next-gen Polo, alongside its familiar range of models, as well as a new sub-Tiguan crossover.

The Polo will be similarly priced to the Fiesta, though it may pack a premium for the more desirable badge it bears on its grille. Furthermore, despite the fact that the architecture which currently underpins it, called PQ25, is still considered modern and used as a basis for new models like the Skoda Rapid and Seat Toledo some five years after the car was first launched, the next-gen model will share its MQB platform with so many of the other VW group cars.

Engine-wise, the usual slew of three- and four-pot turbocharged units could make up the range, though, none have been confirmed. In addition, if they do decide to offer a small eco diesel, it will make for a compelling alternative to the hybrids.

Expect to see the all-new MQB-underpinned Polo make its debut sometime around the year 2015, though, no date has been officially confirmed.
